portable base

when useing the portable base, what messurment do you use to set the depth/hight of the guide? do you use the side markings on the guide or the marks on the portable base? i dont use the portable alot so i always forget witch ones to use.

so if im hanging the lip over the edge i use the marks on the guide. and if im butting up the base to somthing then i use the marks on the portable base. lets get this right, so others will know how to use the portable base.
