Hi i use the penny trick as in the U.K. but i will always stress drill a hole in a test piece first.
The Kreg HD Jig's instructions specifically says to double-check the stop collar's bit depth setting using a nickel.
I find using a nickle to be faster and easier than the other recommended methods - and it ensures that I won't drill through the bottom of my K4 jig base.
Actually, at the same time I can also check the drill guide height setting. If set correctly, the drill bit tip inserted all the way into the drill guide should fall roughly at the half-thickness point for the material getting the pocket holes. The K4 jig base even has markings for the half-thickness points.
