Kreg Owners' Community

Hello All,

My name is Jim & I'm new to the forum & woodworking in general. I have started a battery cart for my robotics team & ran into a problem. Using my K4 system, I read the instructions, watched the videos, etc and thought I had things set correctly.

On a test piece of 1/2 plywood from HD, I set the K4 for 1/2 clamp, the Kreg drill & guide for 1/2 & used the 3/4" Kreg screws per the instructions for a 90 joint. Pecked drilled holes into A, B, C (again, just a test) clamp everything together and drove the screws in. The test was a failure as the screws only came out about a 32" into mating plywood. Obviously I missed / have something set wrong. I would have attempted longer Kreg screws but have to order them. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Thank in advance,

Jim

Did you set the drill stop collar so the drill bit point or shoulder was at the 1/2" mark?

Shoulder should be at the 1/2" mark,  I'd stop it so the shoulder was about 1/32 - 1/16" shy of the mark as most plywood is 1/32" under sized (1/2" plywood is usually 15/32").

Tim's advice is correct. Double check that you set the depth collar based on the "step" of drill bit, and not the tip (pictured below). If you set it for the tip, the screw would stop short like you mentioned.

Tim & KregRep,

Thank you both for responding & you both "nailed" what I was doing wrong. I set the depth collar based on the tip of the drill bit instead of the "step". As soon as I read your reply, I slapped myself in the forehead, reset things, , did another test and it worked perfectly.

Thank you again for the help,

Jim
