In the process of refinishing a children's table for my grandkids. My question; I want to paint some letters and numbers around the top of it. To protect the letters and the table top can I poly over paint?

Hi al would have thought it would be fine to do so .if in doubt try it on a scrap piece of lumber first hope this helps mick.
I have placed a protective coat of poly over some craft projects and it was fine. One problem however may happen is a blurring of any crisp paint lines caused by brushing on the poly. I often reached for a spray poly for this application. Like Mick said, use a scrap first to see how the paint you use is effected and watch for blurring of lines or color.
I used to build a lot of kids furniture, rocking horses and toys & frequently used poly over painted decorations. the only problem is getting in a hurry. You need to wait a minimum of 24 hours before coating with poly. If you are using an oil based paint, even longer. we normally used an acrylic art paint. but what Mick said, it is always best to test. Doyle
