Hello, I am new to Kreg guides for pocket holes. I have made a few test joins and am now comfortable with the tool and its use.
I accept the drill guide settings that are marked on the Kreg R3 box as well as the various measurement guides that are posted elsewhere as the gospel. But I would love to hear an explantation of why the settings (drill shoulder to set collar) for 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 thick wood are actually LONGER than for 1 1/2 thick wood. As well, the settings for 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 thick stock are the same.
The scale progresses as expected - the distance gets longer as the board gets thicker until you reach the 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 thicknesses and then the progression falls apart.
I accept that it works but would love to understand the math and the logic.

Hi Dan. Your questions aren't uncommon. The reason that things start to vary is that screw lengths change. Because of that, the settings change some. For example, 1 1/8" stock uses a 1 1/2" screw, while 1 3/8" stock uses a 2" screw. Therefore, the setting has to back off a bit to accommodate the longer screw.
