Kreg Owners' Community

This may be a stupid question with an obvious answer, but hey I'm new to the community so am allowed at least one of those ...

I am looking at the master jig base, and I see scales on the left and right for setting the drill depth stop.  Each line on the scales is labelled with a number designating the material thickness.  On the left scale the last line is labeled 1-1/4 1-1/2, and on the right scale is labeled 1-1/8 1-3/8.  Furthermore, the 1-1/8 1-3/8 line on the right scale is below the 1-1/4 1-1/2 scale on the left.  So I am confused as to the use of the 2 scales, they are not consistent.

I am using the mini jig to make a pocket hole in a 1-1/2 thick board as my first (simple) project, and the instructions with that jig have you set the collar 4-1/8 up from the step which appears to correspond with the 1-1/4 1-1/2 line on the left scale.

The recommended depth settings on the Mini and the scales on the Kreg Jig base don't match up because the jigs are different sizes/shapes. That means the depth collar may need to be at a different spot depending on the jig. Go with the recommended setting on the Mini if you are using it.

As stated in the Mini instructions, you'll also want to position the Mini so that the end (where the bit exits the jig, is spaced 1 1/4" back from the end/edge of the board.

Here's an easy way to double check your depth collar setting:

1) Set the collar as recommended.

2) Place the bit in the Mini until the depth collar hits the jig.

3) Hold the Mini alongside the board you are going to drill into, making sure the jig is positioned as recommended (1 1/4" back from the end/edge of the board).

4) Look at the bit. It should be positioned so that it will drill the pocket hole and pilot hole to cause the screw to exit the board approximately centered on its thickness.

Thx for the info on the mini jig KregRep, can you advise the purpose of the two scales on the master jig base and the meaning of the numbers?  Why is 1-1/8 board setting deeper than 1-1/4?

Good question westshore. The markings on the jig base are once again not something you can just take as absolutes, or they will seem odd. The markings take into account the wood thickness, the position of the depth collar on the bit, the position of the drill guide in the jig base, AND the length of screw that will be used to assemble the joint.

For example, the when joining 1 1/8" stock, we recommend a 1 1/2" long screw. When joining 1 1/4" thick stock, we recommend a 2" long screw. Therefore, when joining 1 1/8" stock, the hole can go a hair deeper to ensure the proper thread purchase in the mating piece.

I know it's asking a lot for us to just tell you "Trust us, it works." But, we have done extensive testing over the years. Also, once again keep in mind that the settings for each Kreg Jig are intended for that jig.
