Kreg Owners' Community

I just purchased a 2nd Kreg set for custom cabinet installing. However this time my Kreg set came in a cheap carrying case where everything falls around. I contacted Kreg to see why they changed cases & the Rep stated that the folks that use the Kreg system in a bench style working environment had no need for the case anymore. Unbelievable.  I think the reason is that it's cheaper to make & therefor they make more money. So if any of you carry case complainers have a case that you are not using I would purchase it from you.

I ended up not using the cheap case either and purchased a Festool Systainer. They have different sizes. I purchased a second one with drawers in it and all my different Kreg screws, plugs, & bits fit into it. Super happy to have everything ready to go.
I use the $9.00 bright orange tool box from the home depot. I can't use the Kreg carrying case because it takes up too much space without carrying much. As a traveling carpenter, space is at a premium in my truck. I bought a bunch of the Depot cheap tool boxes to store various items and they're great. I can put my jig, screws and clamps in the box and I can put the drill bits, plugs and other stuff in the lift out tray.

I find that the cases that tools come in are too bulky, and waste too much space, and to me space is importanr. Having said that, I have two tools still housed in their original cases. One is my Dremel Multi Max, as soon as I get my work bench completed and more drawers built that case is gone. The other is my Kreg K3, and it might be the only case that will remain. I guess I must have the "older" case because it works well. It certainly keeps my bit safe from damage as well as keeping my Kreg drivers where they are handy.

There is a plan for a Kreg organizer in the new issue of Wood Magazine (March 2011).  May not be exactly what you are looking for traveling though.

I found a Plano fishing tackle box works great and hold everything.

I agree that the case is pretty much useless, but the company needs to make their "numbers". Not making the numbers usually means layoffs, raising prices, making parts cheaper, closing down or, heaven forbid,  outsourcing to China.

Companies have a lot of overhead in America. Paying a fair wage, insurance, utilities, rent for the buildings, unless they own them and paying monthly on them, Maintenence, safe working conditions, OSHA, ETC, ETC.....

If you ever have seen the working conditions in some 3rd world countries, you would understand why it's so cheap there.  People who get hurt on the job are fired and no compensation. Then the next person standing in line takes the same, unsafe job until they are diabled.

Honestly, I would take a cardboard box and forgo the carring case just to keep the company and jobs in America. Besides, making you own carrying case or buying a Plano box gives you the option to keep all of the parts together plus the screws ( different sizes no doubt) in one container, so when you grab the container everything is there, no more going back for the screws because you forgot to grab them due to the screws are in a different place than the tool.

I was fortunate to get my Kreg Set when they still provided the old case.  After looking at the picture of the new case, I'm really glad I did!!  While I have the jig mounted on a board for fast and easy set-up, I like the ability to know that the remaining parts of the kit are secure in the case.

I have this case, if your interested email me.
Chuck i am with you i have the same piece of sh** case as you,,, i did have the old case but when someone broke into my trailer and needed my tools more than I, I had to buy new and the new case sucks.. i work in the feild and would love to take the time to build one but i have better things to build than something that should come with a $150 jig

You kiddin me Rick,  you think upgrading and spending an extra 50 cents per  is going to make them outsource to some 3rd world nation,  this is an american company and i expect american quality.  This new box is not american quality.  3rd world nations do not sell pocket jigs for $150,    p.s.  love my Kreg

I would think the case would be a lot more than a 50 cent increase. Probably more like $20.00 + . I do like to have a carrying case for my equipment too, but I'm more concerned on a quality product than I am a case to carry it in.

P.S. I love my Kreg too!

Blow molded tool cases with specialized compartments take up way too much room for me.  The only tools I keep in the original case are the older ones which came with a nice steel tool box style case.   I bought a DeWalt router which came with 3 bases, the blow molded fitted case it came in is so big it probably would not fit in the trunk of most cars these days.  Considered pouring a slab for the blasted thing but just put it out with the garbage instead.

I do still have the fitted case that my K2000 came in but except for a old dull bit there is nothing in it.   On the other hand, my K2 came in a cardboard box, I still store it in that box when it is not screwed down to a bench.
