Hello, My name is Philip. I live and work in Ohio. I am in the ballpark of the retirement age and have been doing some sort of woodworking or construction my entire life. For the last twenty years I have been teaching a construction course at a vocational school. Prior to that I was a home builder and did excavating and masonry projects. I currently live in a house we built about seven years ago. Per my wifes suggestion I built a cottage type shop in my back yard. The shop is about twenty two feet square with wood and gas heat, bath room and strictly set up for woodworking. I use a lot of cherry, maple, and poplar to produce all sorts of projects. I recently built a router table with Kreg components and purchased a Kreg jig and misc tools to  try a new form of fastening for me. I apprechiate all the valuable nformation and discussions on the site and hope I can help in some upcoming projects or questions. Thanks PHILIP

My name is Ed Baker, from Piperton, TN (ex Swanton, Vermont)

I've dabbled in woodworking for many years and decided to get into it further this Winter so asked for

the kreg Jig Kit which I got and have since purchased the Mini Jig.  I've always been intrigued with this type of joinery and wanted to practice using it.  Unfortunately, that did not happen and guess it won't happen for at least a little while.  I just got out of the hospital from having a valve replacement and a bypass, so at the moment I'm a littlle sore.  God willing, I'll be out in the shop making shavings in no time.

Thats pretty tough form, and possibly one of the most impressive situations for not doing any wood work!

I only hope they used some SS Kreg Screws in the Job, I havent found any material they won't hold together yet.

God Bless you Ed. Sore, yes, but those 2 procedures will have you lifting 4x8 sheets in no time. A also bought the Kreg mini, but the master system is on the horizon.

Ah yes ....... making shavings in the "shop" (garage).  Sometimes I even make a little dust!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you looked at TRITON tools ? I belive they  are produced in Australia. Good heavy duty tools

I am now looking for an accurate and precise manual mitre saw. I have always used an old mitre box and tenon saw and now need more precision and options. The best (?) I have found in Australia is a Nobex Champion NBX-80804 thru Carba-Tec. Cost around A$287.

Anybody used this unit, or got a better suggestion?

During that time, after school - weekends - summers, I ran Baulch Custom Cabinets for 20+ years. School got very busy, I got very busy and allowed the business to go to the side while I began building (and using) computers. Even designed, built, and wired two labs at school. Finally retired in May, 2009 and have since been getting the shop back in order, new tools purchased, old tools refurbished, and my cabinet business, which has become a custom furniture business, back in order. I have the Kreg #3 system and have used it quite extensively in designing some furniture. Hopefully I can get a market for some of this "custom" stuff. If not, I will have no room in the shop and need to begin building "outside" just to get room. I love woodworking. Fun and rather addictive.

Hello Fellow Fort Worthian.

 

Its cool that you have a cabinet shop and get to build a lot of things. I just started into wood working and have some tools. I have been reading up on wood working and am trying to teach myself so that I can build things that I like. Currently I am finishing up a coffee table I built.

My name is Dan and I live in southeastern Wisconsin.   I am a DIYer and learned a lot from my dad and uncle about woodworking.  I also took courses at a Tech. School concerning carpentry, roof framing, stair layout and framing and have built six houses and about as many garages with the help of my wife and family.   I have put together some simple furniture using the " glue and brad " fastening system for joining the wood.  

I just noticed a sale at Menards on the kreg kit where is includes a container of screws free with the jig.   Most of the projects I forsee tackling with this jig will be made out of 3/4" Oak or Maple and Oak or Maple plywood.   Could anyone suggest which type of scews to buy for this application.   From my reading about the jig, I'm pretty sure I will use fine thread screws for hardwood, but what length for 3/4" applications?

Anyhow,  that's my story.

When joining 3/4 to 3/4 you use 1 1/4" screws.  As you said, for your "hard woods" fine threads are proper.
