What kind of glass are you planning on using?  You have to be mindful of weight.

Frank,

While I don't have printed plans for something like this, I don't think it will be a difficult project to plan and build.

I would utilize face frame construction for the front, top and back as if you were going to make a flat panel face frame cabinet, but substituting glass for the flat panel of wood in the front and top.  I would use hardwood for strength probably 5/4 thickness, so you could have additional wood behind (in case of the front) and under (in case of the top) supporting the glass.  If the case does not have to be open for the entire 6' length I would divide it into two sections allowing for smaller pieces of glass and support in the center.  I would use 3/4" plywood for the sides and base, utilizing a comparable wood if the sides are going to be visible and not butted up against a wall or another case.  In the back I would cut double rabbets in the face frame and use two 1/4" plywood panels that slide past each other allowing access to the case.

As for the thickness and type of glass to use, I would search the internet for commercially available display cases and see what they are using; but would guess 1/4" tempered glass would be the minimum, especially for the top.

This will most likely not be an inexpensive project, especially considering the cost of tempered glass.

Hopefully this gives you some food for thought.

Don

Frank,

I did a quick search and found this 6' commercially available glass display case: http://www.discountshowcases.com/Full-Vision-Value-E-Series-Showcas...

At this price building one would probably not be cheaper, but if made from a nice hardwood, would look alot better.

Don

Thanks Don, My plan is pretty much as you suggested, a face frame cabinet with the front glass built like window sash, two pieces, and the top [which will only be 24"x72"]one pc. of glass resting in a rabbeted grove in the top.  I think I will include a center cross brace.  I will use oak for the entire case, 3/4 plywood for the ends and bottom and 1x material for the framing.  Set it on a 1x6 oak box frame to get it off the floor and provide a toe kick.

I very much like the website you found and as you say, you can hardly beat the price.  I know I cannot build what I am planning for anywhere near that.  I will pass it on to my son and see what he thinks,

thanks again,

frank
