Hi all. I am looking for a good mid reange priced planer. 6" X 12 1/2 or 13". I know there are many on the market but unfortunately in Ontario we pay close to twice the price for the same tools that are available in the states, plus taxes etc. I do have relatives who go in the Buffalo area constantly but are not very tool savy and I wouldn't trust them to judge any types so I would have to give them exact specs, etc. Any help would be appreciated. I did see someone who quoted a planer here for $300. In Ontario the same one was $500 so you see my problems......help....Mike

I have used a Ridgid for several years now and have no complaints, they can be purchased at Home Depot. Not sure of the price today, but when I purchased it it was 369 + tax.

Hi Mike, I'm in Ontario as well... keep your eye on Home Depot for the Rigid 13" planner, every now and then they have a great sale, I picked up one for $249.99 and love it. I'm close to the US and have family in Minneapolis and visit often so I was forunate to pick up an 6 1/4" Rigid JP610 jointer as well for $279.00 I've been very pleased with both units and use them often. Not sure what part your in, however keep an eye on Kijiji, they always seem to have decent finds. I've heard some say that the Ryobi Planner is "ok" but the Rigid or a Dewalt is a better choice.

IAs I said I use a DeWalt but Im sure if you treat any tool with respect and keep everything in tune they are all good theses days

I have a Dewalt 12-1/2'' planer (model DW733), i haven't used it that much and lately it's been giving trouble. The feed rollers don't pull the boards through even though i'm only taking 1/32'' off per pass and the infeed and outfeed tables are in perfect alignment with the planer bed as per the instructions. Lately i had to run twenty two lenghts of 10' long by 10'' wide by 1-1/4'' thick popular throught it and i had to physically push the lenghts through, it was quite the workout. I checked the reviews on Amazon before i purchased the planer and some people have had the same problem, overall though it got good reviews. Just something to be aware of if you decide on the DW733. I'll have to take mine to the service centre.
maybe the table just needs waxing, i have had the same problem when I owned the dewalt 733 and a quick waxing of the tables did the trick.

Thanks, i'll try that.
I have a Dewalt 12 inch planer. Its great. Bought it about 2 yrs ago for $450 and is now over $650. I recommend it.

See if a thicker slice will make it run on its own It might not be grabbing enough wood

Thanks, but i've tried that. No joy i'm afraid.
I own a couple different kinds but the work horse is a the Rigid planer. I can throw it in the truck, put it on a stand in the workshop. Best of all they offer a lifetime guarantee on there tools and you can get the planer blades right there at home depot. Easy when you have accidently forgot to check for nails. I have owned my for many years now with no complains. Best of luck, Very exciting to purchase new tools.
