I have been having an issue with the K5 jig. Sometimes when I am drilling the pocket holes at 3/4" it seems like the drill bit hits the depth retaining pin allowing the depth to slip down to 5/8" causing the hole to be to deep. Has anyone else had this problem? I love the K5, it is a real upgrade to the R3 I had been using.

Morning James ,just a thought has the little retaining screw dropped out of the depth stop collar? Or is it simply may be loose . You probably know this ,but do not have the drill on too high a setting set the clutch to a approximate level just enough for the job in hand . Also a good idea to place a dime under the drill point when your setting the depth collar so you do not bottom out the drill bit . Hope this helps Mick .

Hi James,

If the problem is the drill bit, you might try the one from your old R3. They are the same.

I've also used Mick's suggestion of backing the bit a tiny bit shorter than the gauge specifies.

It's not the drill bit. Its pressure being applied to the drill block causing it to slip past the 3/4" mark down to 5/8" mark. It only happens when drilling 3/4" holes for some reason.

Is the Quick-release pin going all the way in the slot? Double check to make sure it "seats" in all the holes. Otherwise it might slip. Just a thought.

Might try cleaning any pitch or residue from the depth stop area of the bit.

James,

Make sure that the pin is fully engaged into the block at the 3/4" setting and apply some downward pressure.  If the block is moving, please send me a personal message so that we can further assist you with this situation.

I am having exactly the same problem, I find I have to pull up on the block after every piece of wood or after a little while I am drilling through the wood with the small part of the drill bit. I do love this new jig , just got it this month and it works so much faster than my old clamp style jig. I have found if I adjust the rear clamp so it doesn't compress the spring as much it helps.

I have experienced the same problem.  My drill guide slips on occasion also.  Not sure exactly what to do to stop it from happening.  Seems that the pin is not holding the drill guide as expected.  Unfortunately when it happened today I didn't realize it had slipped until I saw blue shavings in the saw dust.  I had drilled through the base.

problem may be like mine. The index marks do not line up with the top of the fixture when the pin engages. My settings are actually half way between the index marks. The scale is misprinted.

In response to Rob Ellis- I was hoping someone would point out the fact that the index marks do not line up with the top of the fixture, as you indicated. I would just suggest one experiments the pocket hole without another board to join it to, just to determine how far the screw protrudes. I think you're safe just above or just below the line, but the pin should coincide with the line markings

Hello,

I filed a notch in the side of my K5 so I can see the line properly. The notch is about 1/4" wide by 1/8" deep.

Hi Reck G,

Any chance of a pic of the notch?

I'm having similar issue ( I think ) with 1/2" ply to 1/2" ply with my K5.

The K5 isn't really setup properly for 1/2" ply to 1/2" ply.

I've backed the drill bit off about 2 mm.

This has corrected the screw from breaking out the bottom.

However, the screw head is no longer flush or hidden in the hole.

It protrudes 1 to 2mm.

Does this really matter?

Also, I've ordered the micro pocket hole jig that has been posted will fix this issue.

Just wondering if there is another fix while I'm waiting for the micro?

Thanks in Advance.
