Kreg Owners' Community

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has built a very heavy duty shelf. I need to build something to hold
5-gallon pails of paint, paint thinner, etc.... I am thinking about 2' deep by 5.5' wide by 5' tall.

Not sure if the Kreg system could make it strong enough, there might be between 300 to 400 pounds on each shelf.

This will be for my trailer, I do parking lot striping and need to get the pails of paint off the floor to make more room.

Any ideas or pictures to help?

Thank You.

I think it would depend on how you are going to build this. If you used a 2x4 frame and had support on all sides it should hold. In a situation like this, there's no such thing as too many pocket holes. The more you put in, the more the weight is distributed.
That sounds like a good idea. Do you know of how to build something like that?

I checked the prices for heavy duty metal shelving and it will cost about $100 for used uprights, beams and decking.

Just wondering how it could be built with 2"x4" boards with decking, if you could draw a rough plan and email it to me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks. chris969@swbell.net
Where did you get the parts besides the 2x4's?

I need something that will support the pails of paint on 3 or 4 shelves and be able to secure it to the walls of the trailer. The trailer will move when driving so strength is really important in all angles.

I am kind of leaning toward the metal shelving as it is made for places like Sam's club and other warehouses. All I have to do is buy it, put it together and secure it in the trailer.

Thanks.
I have seen the shelf link system that JD is talking about at Lowe's so you might try there too. That way you won't have to wait for it to get shipped to you. These work really well and support a lot of weight.
Thanks. I think I am going to get that system so I can make it fit perfectly in the trailer and use up as much space as possible.

Another approach... I do some advertising work for Kreg. About a year ago they created (for our work) some shelves for garage shelf/paint shelf built with Kreg Joints, but where 2x4's (I believe) were built-in as braces between the shelves. They were very strong shelves.

If you're interesting, you might ask Kreg whether there are any drawings of these. Send a note to KregRep (http://kregjig.ning.com/profile/KregRep?xg_source=activity) and tell them Doug Garnett suggested you ask. That way they can contact me about it.

Good luck!

I got the 2x4 Basics from the Lowe's here and built the shelf. It seemed sturdy but in a moving trailer I added more bracing on the back of each shelf and on the sides, now it is rock solid.

I got some metal brackets and mounted the shelf to the beams inside the trailer so it will not move at all.

I got the paint on the shelves and with a 46" wide shelf, those (4) 2x4 boards are pretty strong and do not sag with 3 pails of paint on them. I was trying to save a little money and bought the 96" 2x4's at Lowes so I could not make the shelves as wide as I wanted to but they still worked out good.

I got eye-screws and installed them and now with ratchet-straps in the eye-screws, the paint will not fall off the shelves when driving. I got 1" ratchet straps that have a capacity of 1500 pounds each and have 2 on each of the shelves.

Now time to go finish organizing the rest of the trailer so I can get the rest of the equipment in there.

Thanks again for the info and ideas.
