The Kreg Jig HD has been shipped to dealers, and should be on shelves in more and more locations very soon. It's available on kregtool.com as well.  http://www.kregtool.com/Kreg-Jig-HD-Prodview.html

I also noticed the pricing issue on the screws.  I use the blu-kote screws for everything outside.  I wish there would be some longer screws, perhaps near 3" and 3-1/2".  Like I said I use the Kreg screws for everything and I will be using the new HD screws for some inside and outside projects with the larger lumber.  The Kreg screws pretty much prevent splitting because they are self tapping.

Walt,

I read somewhere, where someone drilled ''pilot'' holes, so as to avoid splitting.

Have you looked at any of the ''SPAX'' brand screws?

I've not seen the SPAX screws before.  I'll have to find out who sells them locally or online.  They make longer and larger size screws than Kreg.  I still like the Kreg when I need to pull two pieces together and I don't need the countersinking.  the automatic countersinking would be great in a lot of applications.

Walt,

I get my Spax screws from Home Depot.

I've used some Spax screws, up to 5'' long.

Looks great! but I have been waiting for over a month to get the KREG screws for the normal KREG JIG  from my supplier.   I was going to order direct from KREG Industries but the transport costs are as much as the items themselves.

I have solved my problem of getting the KREG Screws, there is a very good supplier who can give very good service at very reasonable costs at "screwitscrews.com.au"

I know this is an old thread, but I've given up on local suppliers of Kreg screws, etc.  I just went to Lowe's and the "tool" person didn't know what a Kreg HD screw was.  I've had the best luck finding screws on Amazon and I use Amazon Prime to get free shipping.  Rockler here in Portland carries quite a bit of the Kreg line of tools and supplies, but for me they are way across town and I don't get there very often.  Amazon is two days and free shipping for anything Kreg, hard to beat.  Rockler is having some demos on Saturdays that include Rockler and Kreg tools including the new $399 jig.

Walt,

Amazon is putting the hurt on big box stores, for some goods, including Kreg products.

A local Lowes had decreased they Kreg product offerings, as well as other popular products.

Menards offers a pretty good selection of Kreg tools.

Have you checked with them, if they're in your area.

The big box stores are offering less product offerings, that a homeowner needs.

Including many quality tools.  Can't even find a decent pull saw or back saw.

However, they do have a larger selection of candy, and such

OK, My question on the HD screws is do they come in fine thread? If I am using these to connect 1.5" soft maple to 5.5" soft maple, will the coarse threads do ok? I have had great luck with the smaller screws and connecting soft maple, but this is a big project that will be housing a heavy top (150lbs) and a 6 burner stove. Don't really need for it to hit the floor....LOL.

Tim,

I've only found the course thread available.

"Available in one size, head style, and thread"--- (noted in Kreg's info sheet).

https://www.kregtool.com/store/c22/kreg-jigreg-accessories/p217/kre...

When using the screws in "soft maple" as you noted,

I'd suggest using a "screw lube" on the threads---

use an impact driver---

go slow---

use a "start-and-stop" feed, vs a continuous drive.

Use the trigger on the driver to control the start and stop motion.

After driving in a few screws, you'll get the feel of it.

NOTE: Make a few test runs in some scrap pieces, to get the feel for what you're trying to accomplish, and to insure you're getting the desired results---tightness without strip-out.

NOTE: An impact driver does not have a torque adjustment feature.

You'll have to do it my feel, to get the desired tightness.

(Some impact drivers produce more torque over others).

When the joint has drawn up snug, using the impact driver,

I'd use a hand tool driver to seat the screw the rest of the way.

A hand tool driver, but not limited to, a screw driver type tool, a driver bit fitted into a small hand size ratcheting tool.
