Kreg Owners' Community

Hi folks!

I'm new to woodworking and I am trying to take it up to work my way out of depression. I'm a Mechanical Engineer by trade, from Croton-on-Hudson, NY. I've been following the Kreg community and Ana White, Shanty 2 Chic and other bloggers for over a year. I'm planning on getting the Ryobi 6-piece tool kit pretty soon and start on some simple projects.

I recently used power tools for the first time at Home Depot's DIH workshop, featuring one of Ana's projects. But I would feel more at ease and confident using the tools and building projects, if I can watch a few of you build, step-by-step. If anyone lives close by in NY and wouldn't mind me hanging out while you are working on projects, it would help me out tremendously.

Thanks guys.

Hello Nirupama,

If you are unable to find a local buddy, you can always check out YouTube for great beginner projects.

Search for Steve Ramsey - Wood Workers for Mere Mortals.  He posts a weekly project and most all of them use the basic tools.  That will lead you to others who do the same.  If you get a Kreg pocket hole tool and the Rip-It that will allow you to make accurate cross cuts and put the project together.

Best of luck and just start somewhere.

Thank you Mark. There is actually an active female builder Jaime Costiglio. She lives close by. Hope I can hear from her. But meanwhile, I will certainly check out Steve's videos. Major depression causes psychomotor retardation- I feel like I have no strength, no co-ordination, am clumsy, fall often. Woodworking might help bring back some of the lost confidence. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction Mark. I hope I will be successful in starting my first few projects, pretty soon.

You can also call the instructor at the local high school or community college and ask if you can hang out in the woodshop or take a class.

I know it's tough but you have to tell yourself that you hit "rock bottom" and there is no place to go but UP!

Set a goal that you will find a project (again watch one of Steve's videos) and have it completed within a week.  Try to find one simple project a week and go from there.

Like daddywooddawg says, there ARE resources in your area.  Maybe find a cabinet shop and ask if you can hang out, sweep the floors or something and they can be a source of encourgement.
