When was the first time you were introduced to pocket holes?

The first time I saw pocket holes being used was at a Shopsmith demonstration in the early 80's. The rep was making a table and showed a quick way to attach the top. The first time I saw a pocket hole jig being used was on PBS, Norm Abram had several different jigs he use. It was the mini jig that got me into pocket hole jointery. I have used it to make a few projects and repaired a stool and an oak chair that split at one of the edge joints. The best thing that I liked about the pocket hole screws was you did not have to add more wood to brace the split that was beeing repaired. I even use the jig on a stud that my dad was trying to toe-nail, the bottom of the 2x4 was starting to look a bit chewed up. I drilled the stud and had my dad drive a nail into the hole and used a carrige bole to drive it the rest of the way into the hole. It was clean, fast and the stud did not move while it was being nailed. It was the first time I used the Kreg jig with nails and not screws. Now, when my dad needs to fix or screw something together, he ask if I would me to use the jig on it. I know it is a pocket hole jig, but it also does nails. As a DIY woodworker, there are times when you just have to be creative. Remember to think outside the box or should I say jig?

My first exposure to Pocket Holes was at about 4 a.m. when I was having trouble sleeping. I saw my first Kreg Infomercial. I love to do stuff with wood, but I was always afraid of dove tail, and mortise and tennon joinery, plus I didn't have the space. After my third viewing of the infomercial (I'm always a little skeptical) I started doing my research. I finally broke down and bought it, and I haven't looked back. Friends and family think I'm a genius, and very talented. I still have my biscuit joiner, but I haven't used it in years. I keep it though to loan out rather than loaning out my KJ.
