I've been looking to create a dust-collection using PVC, flex-tube, and a shop-vac.  Has anyone done something similar?  I'd like to hear your experiences and how you designed your system.  I had a 2HP dust collector from HF, but it was too big for my shed.  So something smaller is needed.

Thanks

The vortex from rockler looks  good and gets good reviews. I am in the process of building a setup on a small cart. I bought the parts from rockler to build my own.

I've got a small place also. Haven't got the room for a full sized dust collector, neither physical nor electrical. I,m using a 6.5 HP shop vac, ~200 CFM capacity, and have to move the hose from machine to machine. I tried some of those cyclone seperator lids but was still changeing 20 gal shop vac bags about twice a month. I finally invested in the O'Neida Dust Deputy and haven't changed a bag out in over a year.

Thanks for the info John.  Which one did you get?

Hi Brian - I got the one for the 5 gallon bucket, it's called the Dust Deputy Deluxe

However, you can get the Dust Deputy DIY here:

The only difference is with the Deluxe you get a couple of 5 gallon buckets, a handful of 1/4-20 hardware and a gasket. The DIY version has the seperator (the important part) and a set of instructions on using your own bucket.

I picked up one of the Oneida Dust Deputy's and it works great. The filter in the vac stays clean and the suction is strong enought to pick up dust and larger particles. I have the bucket bungie corded to the top of my vac. I plan to build a cart one of these days. Its a great investment for a small ship.

Here's a link to a simple plan that combines a shop vac and the Onieda system into one roll around cart. Might give you and idea or two.

Onno

I decided to get the Deluxe model.  I plan to build a stand similar to the one featured in ShopNotes.  I'll post some pictures once I get to getting it together.

Anyone build a dust seperator with a 30 gallon trashcan and have the trashcan clapsing under presher anyway to reinforce the trashcan?

Plastic trash can? You can increase the airflow through they system.

It only occurs if I block the inlet Totalily with my hand?

Plastic drums & barrels, are much heavier walled objects.

Gary, that's pretty normal unless you are using 14 guage steel or something. A vacuum system reaches maximum negative pressure with 0 cfm of air flow, which shouldn't happen very often without burning up you motor. Suggest you do some googling on just how dust collection/vacuum systems work. You may also want to investigate the Thein seperator. Just from looking at the picture that thing from Rockler looks like a waste of money compared to the Oneida system. Rocklers would probably do a very good job on a planer, but would let the finer stuff trundle on through, unless there is some internal baffling that isn't apparent from the post.
