Building a toybox for my grandson. I'am not good at choosing colors. I would like to get some ideas for a color scheme for this toybox. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello John, I agree with what James is saying about the colors and how they change with that of growing up.  It seems that we all know the simple colors of the primary spectrum and thoes that are associated with that of the young.  I agree that as they age they will change their likes and dislikes.

If I was to build a toy box or a chest for a young boy or girl today my choice would be:  Being the red blooded American that I am, I would use a nice wood colored stain that would make it look like a piece of furniture.  On the top I would paint the colors of RED, WHITE, and BLUE in the form of a waving flag of the United States of America.  These colors are colorful and bright and hopefully these schools in this country will teach him the true meanings of the painting on the box.   Perhaps in the years that come and go he will learn to love the colors more with each passing day and it will become a cherished memory of what his Grand dad gave him.

Now this is only my idea of passing on a heritage, as I am not into the screeching banging music like that of a truck load of geese crashing into a store front plate glass window but more into what I inherited from my  love of America and the teaching I received growing up.

Hi John,

I'd check with his folks about the current colors in his bedroom and take my cues from that.

I'm sure he'll treasure it.

Hi John,

I'm building kids furniture for my daughter -she's due in January :) and I'm painting everything gloss white and my partner is printing out pictures on sticky paper which she will then stick on the furniture. The stickers come off easy so you can keep changing them!

Aesthetics based on color is an extremely difficult issue to achieve 100% perfection.  Famous artists even had issue knowing what color to choose or even if the color they did choose was the right one.  As an High School Art Teacher I feel the best way, at this point, to achieve some success in knowing what colors to choose is taking a color test.  Porter-Paints in the last four year has put out a test based on personality and the connection of color.  Take a look at it, even play the game with your grandson and get an idea of maybe where to begin...I know my students love it because it helps them choose a color to start with and then a palette to go with it.
