Does anyone know if there is anywhere to get electronic parts, such as usb ports, headphone jacks, and the like that can be incorporated into desks?...I would like to add things like this to an older wooden desk that I am going to adapt into a computer workstation, and that I don't want cords and wires messing up the look of...thanks!

Check out ''Radio Shack''.

I've found lots of neat gadgets, and the like, to make customized products.

Thanks for the ideas...I tried Rockler, and while the have the grommet pass through type things, I was more looking for actual connections, like usb, headset jacks, and the like...I will try Radio Shack as well...

After much searching, I came across http://www.datapro.net/ which actually has face plates (like an outlet plate), and while not EXACTLY what I was looking for, they do offer an alternative that while not really want I want on the desk TOP, I could use something like this under the center drawer...I also found that Belkin makes these:

but 40.00 seems kinda pricey for this...compared to what I found on the other site...

If I myself come across any more items like this, or more along the lines of what could be used on the actual desktop, say, similar to this

checkout monoprice.com ... they might have some stuff that you might be able to modify into your solution.   the stuff is inexpensive enough to make some mistakes.

Electronic ''plug-ins, receptacles, switches'', and the like, should not be located on a top ''horizontal'' surface---

the receptacles will collect/retain dust particles, dirt, and the like---

very difficult to clean out.

Locate receptacles/plug-ins/switches, indicator lights, and the like, on a vertical or slanted surface.

I did find this one at Rockler (they also have one for an iPhone):

it can be found at Hide a Port 500

Additionally I found this one...its cheaper, but it doesn't have a cover, nor does it have the audio ports...

but it can be found at usb hub

lastly I found that datapro.net has some great faceplate type applications...

Oh...and thanks to Mike for his post...I've not yet had a chance to check out that site...but I will...

Hi guys!

A friend who is a user here got me to sign up so I can talk about this. I work on computers and just am getting into woodworking.  So far I am having fun. This kind of thing is right up my alley.

I never buy ready made parts, I use the parts I have. If I want USB in the desk, I use a small plastic or metal box sitting under the desktop, screwed to the desk from underneath. CD-rom drives' shells are good for this, or floppy drive cases (of course with all the insides pulled out). You can use old computers' USB jacks and just screw them down, and you might have to make a screw hole here or there with a small drill bit.

For power I use simply power strips zip tied to the legs of a table or desk, for DC power I grab some speaker wire, heavy guage, from the dollar store and use it for DC power from the PC power supply or seperate power supply.

Network cables are all over the place, so are wall jacks so I use those to make the table/desk networked and maybe even integrate a switch or router in there. Small 4 or 5 port switches are practically giveaway items, and can be found at thrift shops all over the place. Just don't use NetGear, ever

For lighting you can tap off the DC power wires or use cheap-o LED lights also at the dollar store. Zip ties are your friends for cabling, run them along wherever you want them, zip them to the legs and parts they are nearest to.

I had to move once, and the computer I was using was so tied up to the desk it quit working when I unhooked everything, LOL!

Hope this helps, great to be here!

Nathan
