Kreg Owners' Community

Folks,

I've read numerous posts about the Kreg jig and hooking ones shop vac up to it to keep the dust down. I asked the forum for suggestions for an "automatic switch" to turn on the vac when my drill is turned on. One suggestion was for a Rockler switch. Another was for one at Sears.

I bought the Sears switch, hooked up my vac and drill. I "activated" the drill and the vac never powers up. I hooked the vac up directly to my Kreg, drilled a couple practice holes, and it does an amazing job of keeping things clean.

My question then is this ----- Should my Dewalt DWD110K drill cause the switch to activate and turn on the vacuum. In all honesty, I did NOT try it using my table saw nor mitre (chop) saw. Could it be that the drill doesn't draw enough to make the switch activate?

.........HERE'S THE FOLLOW-UP TO MY QUESTION ...........
After reading everyone's responses etc I ultimately returned the "switch" to Sears. I asked if they had another one and the guy in hardware was kind enough to test the new one with me before I left the store. We were able to power up a couple of those "heart-shaped" hand-held sanders and a Dewalt drill similar to the one I own. And the little sanders powered up the drill also.

I returned home with the new switch and used my drill as the "source" of power. I was able to successfully power up our Dyson (inside residential vac) at both very low drill speed and at full speed. And the vac had about a 6 or 7 second delay in turning off after the drill was powered down. This is exactly the operation a Kreg Jig user would want. I now have a "working switch" that will control my shop vac each time I pull the trigger on my Dewalt drill.

As a side note ..... I have also purchased an " i-socket " tool & vacuum switch from Woodcrafters. This device is supposed to do the same thing. It should arrive some time next week.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I appreciate your help.
Steve

I kinda have my doubts, Phil. Each time I powered the drill I immediately went from "off" to full power. I made it a point NOT to use the drill at low rpm(s).

I am not familiar the operation. Then I looked up the specs on your drill. It says VSR. Is it possible to test with another corded tool? I am wondering if the variable speed control has some sort of limiter or non switch issue?

I suppose it is obvious that I am not an electrician?

I've used these before... they're VERY nice! I'm wondering if you have a defective unit or if you somehow don't have it hooked up right? When I used it, as soon as I depressed the drill trigger and any power was sent to the drill, the vacuum started up immediately!
Thanks Phil. That answers my question. Apparently the switch I received was defective. I too thought the drill should activate the switch, but I thought it best to ask "someone who knows" before returning it.
