SPAM — vb  , spams spamming spammed
1.

unsolicited electronic mail or messages simultaneously sent to a number of e-mail addresses or mobile phones or social media accounts.

_________

As many of you know, we've been experiencing some problems with SPAM (i.e. digital junk-mail) in the community.  Some of you have been receiving unsolicited messages on your profile page and subsequently your email inbox.  I'd like to address a few issues regarding this problem:

  • First of all, we work very hard to prevent SPAM in this community and will continue to do so.  However, we are unable to stop 100% of the events.  We apologize for any inconvenience.  Receiving these type of messages can be frustrating, time consuming, and a bit disheartening.
  • Do not be alarmed if you receive SPAM.  You were simply one of the unlucky few who was randomly selected by the SPAMMER to send a message to.
  • The SPAMMERS do not have access to your personal information such as email address, etc.  The reason you may be receiving emails is simply because the community is automatically notifying you of a message you received from within the community.
  • A bit of background information regarding our efforts to thwart SPAM: when anyone signs up to become a member of the Kreg Jig Owners' Community they have to answer a simple question.  By answering this question correctly, the community software knows you're a real person.  This prevents automatic-type SPAM computers from making profiles automatically and using them to SPAM community members.  Unfortunately, if the SPAMMERS are really persistent and are committed to getting in they can still do so by hiring real people to fill out the form to create a real-person profile.  Up until recently SPAM had been virtually eliminated in the Kreg Jig Owners' Community.  We will continue to work to keep the community as free from SPAM as possible, but we need your help.
  • As our community continues to grow (now over 26,000 members and thriving) we will continue to be a bigger target to SPAMMERS.  This means that members will need to take a more active role in pointing out problems when they surface.
  • If you see any questionable posts/messages (someone inviting you to send them money or to buy something or to visit their website for a 'good time,' etc.) please report it to KregRep by sending a personal message.  To send a personal message, simply visit KregRep's Page, and then click 'send a message'.  Be sure to include the name of the spammer, or perferably, a direct link to the spammer's personal page as there are sometimes multiple users with the same name.
  • After being notified by community members of a suspected SPAMMER, KregRep will delete the user's account so further mailings are halted.

Thank you for your patience with this issue.  We're confident measures we're taking will reduce the likelihood of frustrating SPAM in the future.

Thank you for taking action on this matter. I had no doubt that Kreg would not take this spam incedent lightly. Other than birthdate, there is not a great deal of info that would be of much help to identity thieves. You need to know that I am not upset with Kreg or the website. Things of this nature happen and should be expected to happen when one enters the cyber- world. I must also say that I was amused by the content of the message, and still am very curious about the motive for sending out such a message. I assume that you recieved and read the copy that I sent to you.

I see just now that Stephan Hamer posted the message to this discussion just a few minutes ago. GEE WHIZ! I thought that her message was a personal one for me only!

Too bad my first post to this forum is in response to a spamming problem.

I, to, received a post on my wall from a "Miss Rita D" yesterday with an invite to contact her through an email address. She wanted my email address & an "undisclosed" relationship.

My wife was not a happy camper when she saw it!!

Regrettably, I deleted the objectionable post from my wall & changed the settings....I should have reported the problem.

Oh, I purchased the Kreg Master Jig a month ago & have used it to build a face frame for a 63" W  x  30" H  x  15" D cabinet/TV stand. A real departure for me as I've been a mortise & tenon guy for many years. The jig saved me a considerable amount of time & the joint appears to be solid....also, no glue cleanup!

Cheers

Hello Joe; This is a question for you. Did the email that you assumed was from Kreg have an attachment?  I have been told by people who deal with computor viruses that these "bugs" can only get into a computor through an attacment.

kenny

I am a moderator on a craft forum.  I used to ban 8-10 spammers a day.  The administrator banned the IP addresses from an area in China where a majority of the spams were coming from.  Now I only have to ban 3 or 4 spammers a week.  Keep track of the IP addy's and you'll be able to determine where most of the spams are coming from.

In the bottom corner of each post of the craft forum, there is a red exclamation point that members can click on to report a spam.  That helps a lot because I don't get a chance to read each and every post that is submitted to every thread.

Thanks for letting us know about this spam.  I haven't posted anything here yet (until now), but I come here a couple times a day to look at the amazing things people make.  I appreciate the professional and friendly spirit of this forum and I'm glad you're working so hard to get rid of spam.

I also received an invitation from someone who got my email from my profile at Kreg. I've been at this long enough that I recognized it as spam. Unfortunately, I deleted it without reporting it before I knew you wanted me to report it. I'll try to keep it for you next time. Controlling spam and hackers is a bigggg! problem. Thanks for your efforts to control it on this site. Jim Osteen

Hi Kenny,

I believe it was one of the first ones I got after joining the group. I don't remember if it had an attachment or a link to follow through on. This one went to the Spam file, I opened it. I did report it to the forum right after it happened from another computer.

I can tell you it was the last thing I ever did on that computer. After that I think it would just go where it wanted not where i sent it. We had virus protection on it. No help. Eventually we had to wipe out the whole thing and try starting over. It worked real lousy after that and was pretty much useless.  I have been told by computer people that you can get infected by just opening some emails. Maybe they have self loading attachments, I don't know. Just be careful of anything in the junk box. Anyones email address can be hijacked to show up as the sender when they are not.

Nobody else seems to have had a problem until now so I don't know why it happened to me.
