Scott, I went to the shop and prepared a sample of what I am saying about plywood jointing hardwood in a 45 degree miter. In this situation I cut the 45 degree miter on the solid stock and pocket screwed it to the plywood. I photograped and it is shown without any finish on it. There is no wood filler and if you look you will see that you can match the wood grain and color with a little work. All I did here was go through some scraps I had, therefore if you pick the lumber and the sheet goods you can make a joint that is almost non visible even without a finish.
