I highly recommend the Kreg sawdust attachment. It doesn't just keep down the mess . The drill comes out clean with no sawdust and the pocket is also clean. No need to turn the pocket upside down to tap out the sawdust. Keeping the drill bit clean also improves the life and sharpness of the bit. Get one for $10. You won't be sorry.

I too find that last 16th of an inch to be bothersome with the hardwoods (especially maple), and something I have to be diligent in paying attention to.

For maple I find it nearly impossible to go straight in and get an easy continuous drilling movement to the bottom. I usually pull up at about ¾ way down to clear the flutes in the bit for the last part of the hole.

I have the K-2 Kreg and it has no hole in it base for saw dust or wood chips and I have no problem with it. Mine is one of the best jigs Kreg build and was one of the first K-2 models and were not manufactured with the hole. At one time Kreg Tools offered the drilling of the jig by sending it to their company and it would be drilled as a up grade. At one time Kreg Tools offered the drilling of the jig by sending it to their company and it would be drilled as a up grade. My thinking at the time is why mess with a good thing that worked and I elected not to have it done. So far I have never found the need for the holes. In a cabinet shop I drill all types of wood from soft woods, hard woods, plywoods and even melamine and chip board with out the difficulty of chips binding and or pluging the boring hole. The hole debris come up the drill flutes and fall out the top of the jig. The only upgrade I have done to the jig is add a air cylinger clamp to the jig.
I use a Kreg scerw box.tag:kregjig.ning.com,2013-01-25:2900167:Comment:5163672013-01-25T18:59:15.447ZDavid Deanhttps://kregjig.ning.com/profile/DavidDean
