DVD Shelf Unit, part 2

Recently I was asked if I was interested in making a shelving unit for a coworker. She has a son that is big into movies, and she needed him to keep his DVD collection nice and organized. She didn't have a large budget, so she came to me to design her something that fit her dimensions. She said it should be no higher than 64", and no wider than 18". Also, it had to have seven shelves. Well, I went to Menards and saw that aspen pine was on sale, so I told her the cost would be $40, and I charged her with $80 overall.

This is how far along I am after two evenings and one Saturday in the garage in my shop:

I'll have more as this project develops. Wait until you see what I have in store for the outer sides of this shelf.

2/12/10 Update

OK, here I have woodburned in movie titles on the left side of the DVD shelf. The movies are 300, Star Wars, Alien vs. Predator, Punisher, Uncle Buck, Batman Begins, and Avatar.

2/15/10 Update

OK, here is the other side, all woodburned with more movie titles. The Jurassic Park one was the most labor-intensive, but I love the look of how it turned out. The Lord of the Rings one was detailed too, but again it turned out great. I think I like this side better than the first side. Tough to really pick, but what the heck, it was fun!

2/18/10 Update

OK, this project is finally done. I put the last coat of finish on it last night, and then brought it in to work today. I put it in our photo studio and took the best shots i could of it. I hope I did it justice. Here you go:

This is one side of it which I showed you all a while back. The movies are: 300, Star Wars, Alien vs. Predator, Punisher, Uncle Buck, Batman, and Avatar.

This next shot is of the DVD shelf front on.

And finally, here is the other side, after staining and finishing:

These movies are Lord of the Rings, X-Men, Jurassic Park, Futurama, Superman, Indiana Jones, and Star Trek. Why Futurama? I guess her son is a big fan. Also, below is a shot of both sides put together. I figured why not, I have Photoshop at my disposal, and who wants to scroll up and down to see each side? This way you get to see both sides at once.

Oh, this last shot is for James Waller. He wanted to see it filled with movies. This is my entire collection, and it still didn't fill it to capacity. If you look below on the bottom shelf, you can see there is room for a few more.

I'm really thinking now that I should add movie titles to my own shelf in the background. I have the room for it, and I got jealous that I was selling this one to my coworker. We'll see... it's a long winter ahead. lol

I output the logos from work and then traced them onto the project.

Great job on the entire project, it looks great! The woodburning is very impressive! Did you use patterns of some type or are you just a great artist too?

I once posted how I do my woodburning. Look at my blog posts and you'll find it. It's relatively easy after I show you. It's all traced, but the effect is still cool!
