Dining Room Table

In March I moved in with my girlfriend and neither one of us had a dining room table. I told her don't worry, I'll make us one. She asked me if I knew how to create one, so I took her here to this site and showed her all of my previous projects. After she saw the pie safe, she basically said, "OK, if you know how to make one of those, then you know how to make a dining room table. I trust you."

I did have to tell her, though, that I'm not a chair maker. We'd have to find…

Irwin Customer Service

Far too often these days and especially when it relates to purchasing tools at the big box outlets we hear or experience customer service nightmares. Personally, I have been on the end of a number of disaster stories when it comes to dealing with some of the employees at a certain well known DIY store where the staff wear orange aprons near my house. Sometimes you can't get help when you need it. Other times, you get help from someone who doesn't have a clue what they are talking about and just… Continue

Denver Woodworking show

w00t! Today I'm headed to the Denver Woodworking show! I'm all excited, I was hoping to have gone yesterday but had some "honey-do's" that needed to get done first in prep for our early Xmas gifts.

What makes me excited about attending the show is that as a new woodworker, I can get better exposure to all the cool stuff out there than say an afternoon in a single store. Plus there are a couple of seminars I'm pretty excited to attend, Jim Harvey's and the pen turning. I'm…

Ammo Crate Benches

Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve written, but I have still kept woodworking, trust me. 2010 has been a whirlwind ride, that’s for sure. A new girlfriend, a new job, moving soon into a new townhouse, you name it. I didn’t forget about anyone, just had a lot on my plate this year.

One of the…

Dremel Trio

I got sold via adds/web site/etc. I'll admit it- got suckered. This tool does nothing that several other tools (namely 'Roto Zip') , jig saw, router, etc won't do with patience and due care. I have a DeWalt VSR reciprocal saw that performs admirably with the right blade and speed control. If I were a 'tool collector' I'd not be disappointed for it does have some specific positives, although limited. In addition; an entire new set of accessories will need to be purchased at an outrageous (my… Continue

Grizzly Catalog

I remember when I was a kid I would always look forward to the Sears and JC Penny wishbooks. I would spend hours going over the pages of all the cool stuff, toys, musical instruments, women's underwear sections. Oh wait, I never did that! ;-)

Recently I got the big Grizzly catalog and it threw me back to those days as a kid. I immediately dropped all the other mail on my desk and went over to the couch and began flipping through those magical pages. I was whisked away to my…

They call it labor day for a reason...

I finished the kitchen cabinets on schedule and my brother and sister-in-law came up this weekend and attacked the project with gusto...

First the sheet rock came down, and then most of the wall studs came out. …

It's time for a cabinet meeting!

The great cabinet build started in earnest on Thursday. Before any cabinets got built, however, I had to wait for a little help to show up to cut the full sheets of plywood down. While waiting I gave the shop a pretty good cleaning and even managed to organize my sheet good pile.…

One Project Down, Another Project Ready To Go

Finally finished the face frames on the built-in bookcases, and they are now done except for painting (and my lovely wife is going to take care of that).

Here is the "finished" product that still needs some "finish".…

Deck with Kreg deck system

I have just finished building a deck using the Kreg Deck Jig. This is the third home deck I have built, hope it is my last. The first deck built in the 50's we used galvenized nails to hold the decking down, and every year or so pounded the old nails down and added some new ones. The second deck, built in the 70's, I used spiral galvenized screws that had much better holding but over some years still had to be reseated. This new deck has the Kreg screws that are seated on the edges rather…

KREG Square Cut Tool

As soon as I got back to the shop with the tool, I inverted my 71/4 circle saw and adjusted the tool. I set the guide arm so that it was just inside the teeth on the blade. My blade has staggered teeth. Then I drew my cut line. I then set the guide arm just inside the mark, bingo! Just what I wanted. There is one other thing that I did. The stock was firmly clamped. There is 10 rubber feet on the tool. I set the tool in place, fired up one of my KREG clamps, and, firmly but…

A cool Memorial Day find!!!

I took the chance to head the shop this morning. I decided to finish salvaging an oak bedroom set that was no longer suitable for use as furniture.

The bedroom set belonged to my mother during her childhood and was where we slept when visiting my grandparents. It was somewhat crudely built, but lasted for many years. Grandma ultimately gave the furniture to Mom, who in turn gave it to me. As the years of use took it's toll on the furniture, I decided to salvage the lumber…

Missing states

I went to the new website and had a problem signing on as an new member because I found that Alaska is not listed as being in the United States. Upon closer inspection I noticed that Hawaii is also aparently not part of the United States either. According to my history teacher Alaska is the 49 th state in the union and Hawaii is the last to date as the 50th. I and most alaskan's and folks from Hawaii would appreciate it if you could rectifiy that little problem.

Now that being…

- cue Alice Cooper - "School's Out for the Summer....."

...or is it?

Our oldest finished 1st grade on the 21st and her birthday was on the 15th. My wife came up with the idea of building her a playhouse, so I shuffled the next project I had in mind (my miter saw stand) and made this one my first. She found a few plans that she liked on U-Bild and so we took one of those and made a few upgrades.

What better way to torment a kid over summer vacation than with a playhouse that looks like...…
