To make sure that the grain flowed in the lid, I first glued 3 boards together. After the glue had set, I ripped 5" off of the back of the top, then 6" crosscut on each side of what was left. This left me with 4 pieces, I glued the crosscut pieces back to the rip and it leaves a perfect 1/8" gap for the lid.
