This is less the 1 2x4
and less then 10 bucks to make with the insert .
first cut on the 2x4 is 13.5 " you need 2 of them next cut is 12.5 2 of them
then 1 20" inch pc.
now take the 13.5 inch pc's and rip them down to 1/2 " you will get 4 per board and the same with 1, 12.5"
then take the other 12.5" pc and rip it sq. 1.5 x1.5 ( these are your legs . setting the table saw at 1" deep cut with the fence at 1/2 ( please use a push block ) and cut out the center as you see in one of the pic.
once that is done then you have to cut the legs to 6" ea.
now that you have the legs you need to take the 12.5 " x 1/2 pc. ( not the 13.5" pc ) and cut those down to 5.5" for a total of 6
I used a brad nailer for the next part . take 2 legs and 3 13.5 " pcs and flush with the top nail them in leaving 1" from the bottom . do this for both sets of legs . now stand then on end and nail the side pcs in .
now for the top take the 20" pc and rip it to 2" and then rip it on edge to 3/4 " thick . cut 2 pcs 15.5" and 2 at 4" . use the pocket hole jig to make a frame .this should leave just under 1/2 over hang on the inside to put a cleat in and attach the top to the box on the long sides and with one of the left over long side .... tack it to the bottom so that the insert can rest on it . ( these will be the only nail holes you will see . and your done !
