they are bench dogs they are used for clamping a pc in place while working on it or for clamping while gluing up a panel, they work in conjuction with the pop up dog on the front of the vise. if you look at the front of the vist you will see a little rectangular pc that slides up and down

I cannot recall ever seeing this type of vise "recessed" into the table top. I guess I am curious because maybe it is a technique I could be using that I could benefit from.

if you look close at the vise there is no scew to hold the bench dog up. I purchased the vice from harbor freight for 34.00 and the first time i tightened the screw the threads pulled out it was a m 10 or something like that. I ran a 1/4 x20 tap through it and went to the big orange store and picked up a thumb screw. now I'm more then happy with the vice

we are talking about recessing the back of the vice inside of the table top. and that would of left me with a 2'' pc hanging on the edge

Nice top. I am curious about what you guys are talking about recessing the rear jaw.
The vice appears to be flush with the edge. Or am I reading the comments wrong?
I have the top edge of my vice flush with the top of the table to maintain the table top clearance.

I thought about recessing the vice but I was afraid that the vice was too close to the end of the bench and the little pc on the end would have a hard time making thru life.

Nice top, i see you didn't recess the rear jaw of the vice. I've seen some people leave a gap in the edging for the rear vice jaw so it's front edge is flush with the edging. Anybody for or against this technique?
