On the poplar and padauk box, I experimented with pins. Each corner has 6 one eighth inch holes into which a 1/8" poplar dowel was glued. I was hoping there was a little bit more contrast with the end grain on the dowels, but I didn't apply any color to either box, so they almost blend in completely.
I also wanted to do a thumb lift, so attempted this on the poplar box, as well. It was roughed out on the band saw and sanded to its final shape on the spindle sander.
