Here are the holes that will allow me to connect the bed rails to the headboard and footboard. All of the holes are 1/2 inch in diameter. The top and bottom holes are 3/4 inch deep and will accept dowels in the end of the bed rails. The middle hole is drilled through and, on the back side, is countersunk 1/2 inch with a 1 inch Forstner bit. I will use 4-inch long 3/8 inch hex bolts that will go through the into the bed rail and be joined through a hole on the inside of the bed rail. I'll take additional pictures of that part when I finish the project.
