Here are the finished headboard and footboard. As you can see, I used standard 2-by-6 lumber, trimmed on my table saw from the standard 5 1/2 inches wide to 5 1/4. If I was starting from the beginning, I would have trimmed it down to 5 inches even instead. 20/20 hindsight and all that. The rails and styles have a 9/16 groove in them to accomodate a backer board of 1/4 inch MDF and a field of 5/16 inch pine tongue-and-groove paneling I had leftover from another project. I finished off with a nice cap on top of 3/4 inch clear pine, 2 inches wide. I used a 1/4 inch roundover bit on all exposed edges.

David, I think oak in those dimensions should work very well for this kind of project.  I'm sure others here with much more experience can help answer that question.  My next big project will be another bed and this time I plan to make it from red oak, using 5/4 boards for the framing of the headboard and footboard as well as the rails.  I also plan to incorporate a shelf unit into the headboard.  I'm still trying to figure out some design ideas regarding the panels I'll use in the headboard and footboard.  I'm not sure if I want to use flat panels from good oak-veneer plywood or possibly do more and make some raised panels.  Good luck with your project.  It's always nice to get some free lumber, particular hardwoods!

Free Hand Guard (dust collection)

Hi.  I'm wondering if anyone has used the Woodpecker Free Hand Guard for dust collection on their bench top router table during pattern routing.  How effective is it?  It's adaptable to any router table.  Continue

New Kreg 720Pro

I saw the video Kreg put out for this new jig and had high hopes for it.

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.

First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
