I began with Walnut cut from a friend's tree. He had a sawmill and I had him cut it 1 1/2 inches thick. For the desk top I had him cut it 2 1/2 inches thick. I had him leave the bark on everything but the desktop, but even there I kept the natural bark line. The wood was at the kiln for 8 months. The bark lasted through the felling of the tree, the sawmill, the 300 mile trip to my house, the kiln, the final planing and sanding, and the assembly.
