Yes the tool is a tad more expensive then I cared but their tools when connected to the vac are tremendous and in the long run worth it, but it is a matter of perspective.  Anyway...depending on the wood I am sure you could achieve the same look with a hand planar.  Don't worry about the bites the sanding will take care of that...remember this is a random process so whatever you achieve it is the right look.  Actually you could try using a belt sander or any power sander and just start randomly taking off wood.  The first passes are rough the final sanding makes it nice and smooth even over the really rough spots....just give it a try.

Lol 600 bucks would help more! But a truly awesome piece you've made! My wife loves it but I've spent a lot of money in tools in a short amount of time and I don't think this one will be in the budget for at least 6 months so I guess my rustic table will have to wait.

Power hand planar....yeah I kinda of randomly moved acrossed and lifted up and went in different directions...almost skimming across....there is a depth setting though.  It is a fairly powerful hand planar....the piece was clamped down as I was working on it.   When I was done planing, I did a rough sanding...then stained and light sanded....after the light sanding you can see all the planar marks that needed more sanding work....then final staining.....then 4-5 coats of Waterlox Original.  Hope this helps.

I saw that. Was it the power hand planar or a bench planar? The example I saw on the hand planar head looked like it took smaller carvings out of the wood as yours look like longer strides? Or is it all in how fast you move over the piece?

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.

First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
