Ronda, I used hot pink acrylic paint, thinned with warm water about 50/50. I brushed it on the ash liberally and let dry.  I then hand sanded with 220 grit paper, then repeated.  The white ash has a grain similar to oak and is very open, so absorbs the thinned pigments pretty well.  I think the pigment in the paint would be too large for this to be effective on something like maple.  This does have a waxless clear shellac over the top, as well.
