I saw your mudroom bench, made of barn siding too.  Some of that wood was really rough -- perfect for a "mud" room.  I have always loved the combination of stained wood for the horizontal surface, and painted wood for the rest.  Your use of glaze on the paint really takes that look to another level.  Nice!

Hey Rick...I love Waterlox as well.  I use whenever I can.  I put down one coat of sealer then stain/dye.  I do not add to the Waterlox.

Jon, haha, I was right about the barn siding!  Great zoom feature here.  I can even read the menu!  LOL

I love Waterlox.  I did all my floors with it.  They recommend adding stain to first coat, which I did.

Out in the countryside, I see abandoned barns all the time.  Over time, the boards start disappearing.  Wonder what happened to them?

Hey Rick,

Well first this was made for another kitchen...actually it matches a mudroom I did that is on this site.  The beige framing is made from maple and glazed  The Mudroom matches their kitchen colors.   So this reclaimed barn wood was used for the mudroom bench and I just carried it over to the stove cover.  Just like the mudroom bench....I rough sand the barn wood...stain dark brown or black....then sand again to smooth out the remaining rough spots so there are no splinters...then I stain a lighter brown. This brings out the depth of the distressed wood because the black is in the crevices.   Then I put about 6-7 coats of Waterlox Original down.  Hope this sheds some light on the wood.

Thanks Jon.  I definitely can see the utility for an island cooktop, but weren't those glass tops s'posed to be easy to clean?  haha

First I thought it matched the c'top, but the zoom in of the cover looks like reclaimed barn siding stained and poly'd.  Obviously wood is lighter.  What is it?

Rick,

It covers the stove giving both added surface for holding plates of snacks for parties and covers a sometimes dirty stove top. our stove top is glass and it is a pain to keep perfectly clean....so my wife wanted one when she saw one at a neighbor's.

Jon, I stumbled across your "stove cover" for the island cooktop with interest, while looking at your mudroom pics.  Can you explain how this is used?  I have never seen this before.

Hopefully you still frequent this site.
