You are right. even though the front cross member here was put there to stabilize the structure it turned out to have exactly the side benefit you are talking about. I naturally found myself using it to lean my foot on, consequently it does help a lot. It also serves when I occasionally use a stool to "sit", again I use it to rest my feet on.
The one thing most people forget about when standing at a stand-up desk or any raised counter is a foot rest. In the old days, (the 80's) I did a lot of board drafting and I often stood in front of the drawing board. One of the older guys got me a small, short stool (about 12inches tall) to put one foot on while drawing. By alternating feet, you can literally stand for hours like that without fatigue or back pain.
