I built the top, ends, and front as a unit. The original mantel was only 4 inches. I put Liquid Nails on the concrete mantel and set the "unit" down on top of it. As an extra measure of security I then put a 1x4 up underneath and pocket screwed on each end and into the front "unit." The space between those pocket screws and the fireplace was so narrow I had to use a small bit with a small ratchet to tighten them. I used the deep c-clamps to clamp the top and bottom tight against the top and bottom of the original mantel.
Steve, your finished product looks great! How did you remove the old one without damaging the remainder of stone? Or did you build over it? Thanks!
