Thank you, yeah I was shocked how fast it went. Oh, wait, to clarify – This morning, I drew it out, went to Rockler (oak $2 a board foot!) and did the cut list.

Then in the afternoon I drilled it and put it together with the fine thread screws from Tony’s post.

Assembly = about 2 hours. Design and cut list = another 2 hours. Trip to Rockler and stopping for Hawaiian food along the way, priceless. ;)

Tony, thank you. I greatly appreciate the encouragement; I had been scared to jump into oak. You are right, the fine threaded screws worked great, very easy actually.

Here is the table I made today (not stained yet). I “borrowed” your design (thank you!), but needed it taller than yours so I added the lower cross pieces.

Just make sure you use the "fine" threaded screws for oak and do not over tighten or you will strip them. I set a pretty loose torque setting on my drill; just enough to assure the screw seats tight. Otherwise the self tapping screws work great without pre-drilling. I would also use a bead of wood glue on the edge joins of the top. The top edge joints are plenty strong but a very small gap has appeared on one of them. Its' not real noticable unless you are looking for it.

Elegant craftsman design. I am going to get of the Web and go make one of these today.

Any problem with the self-taping screws in the oak? (I generally struggle with oak, even with diligent pre-drilling)
