This is the pedestal table leg for my new dining room table. The notches at the top will hold cross sections of arms to support the table top.

The grooves are 3/16" deep and are on all four sides, obviously. I thought it would give the piece some more interest. The corners are 1/4" rounded using a router. Both the top and bottom of the leg are notched like that to accept supports that will keep the table up, and support the 40x40" table surface.
