Have had these slabs for around 7 yrs and to start out they where 20 inches wide 4 inches thick,to wide for my planner so I split in two and run through planner. The stiles are from a mantel that was cut off to fit wall. What I did was notch the shelves and fitted to stiles used one pocket screw each connections and lots of Gorilla glue. Now I need some advice on what clear coat should I use on all of it? Will send pictures also when completed.

I would use a product called Waterlox...it's a tung oil based product.....really makes the grain "pop" I use it on everything and anything wood.....floors/countertops mantels and so on.....you can get it on line or at Woodcraft.....let me know if you have any questions.

Shellac is great, make sure you have some doors open/windows, it's a little strong. You can get a clear shellac or an amber shellac. It dries VERY fast. I normally put 3 to 4 coats on then use some 0000 steel wool and flatten the bumps then do 2 finals.

I would use shellac on that piece. It dries fast and you can get a few coats on in 1 day.
