the squares are made up from scrap maple and a pc of black walnut someone gave me, cut to 1/2' thickness and edge glued and then cut at a 90 like you said, then I glued the strips to a pc of 1/4' hardboard

Are your squares thin veneer or are they glue up and cut at 90 degree to glue up.I have done couple and I would glue up a dark ,and then light stick together and after it dries then turn the project so you cut across grain to make the pattern ,then lay out to make the board ,glue that up and trim off to fit in frame.
Sounds very time consuming which it is.

Jig settings for 2 ¾ x 1 ½ boards with 30 degree miters?
