And this is wood I milled for future projects. It Sweetgum/Liquid Amber, some Chinese Elm and Black Oak. It is all cut to 2-1/4" thick slabs. It is now in storage for drying that will take 1-1/2 to 2yrs. to dry. The widest slab is 28". I also have one piece of the elm, not pictured, that is 4" thick with some great crotch figuring. I guess I'll have a few years to figure out what I want to make from that piece.

Kim,
I live here in central CA where there many oak species. The best way to identify oak trees is by their acorns. My daughter is a wildlife biologist so I have a good source of information. I know a black oak when I see one because I have many of them on my property.

The black sawdust you see is most likely from the bark. I have mostly slabbed my oak, but am currently building a mini-mill for quarter sawing my oak/walnut. I have two shops, a wood shop and a metal shop so I'm fortunate to have the best of both worlds build with wood/metal. That is great your uncle and provide you with milled oak. It's that darn drying time that's the tough part.

I have a question for you. How do you know if it is black oak? My (awesome and wonderful) uncle has a sawmill and saved me some quartersawn oak and 12" oak boards. It has black sawdust on it. I wondered if that was a characteristic of black oak? I thought it was just some grey dirt at first.

Free Hand Guard (dust collection)

Hi.  I'm wondering if anyone has used the Woodpecker Free Hand Guard for dust collection on their bench top router table during pattern routing.  How effective is it?  It's adaptable to any router table.  Continue

New Kreg 720Pro

I saw the video Kreg put out for this new jig and had high hopes for it.

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.

First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
