I found plans for a leaning shelf on Ana White's website and and modified them for our specific needs. The finished project is 4 feet wide, perhaps 7 feet tall.
I built everything using oak 1x4s and oak plywood, and pocket screws to build each shelf and the ladder portion.
After making all the cuts I realized that the front of the plywood shelves was really not the look I wanted. I found a comment on a website about trimming some oak and attaching to the front, and that's what I did.
This piece is very heavy and I brought the ladder, and the shelves, to the living area and assembled it there.
I pre-drilled holes in the shelf supports and the legs, and attached each shelf to those with wood screws. I also drilled two wood screws per shelf into wall studs for extra stability.
A coat of pre-conditioner, 2 coats of Minwax Golden Oak stain, and 3 coats of Polycrylic finally resulted in a nice Christmas gift for my wife for a lot less than what I would have paid for in the stores.

The second was completed and installed today. I thought I had a brilliant idea, flip the shelf supports upside down so when the shelves are attached, the pocket holes are covered up. Then I remembered that the first set of shelves fit very snugly and I had to loosen the pocket screws to install each shelf without damaging the finish. I measured the twin and realized I would need to do the same thing. So I had to flip each shelf support around. Thankfully I hadn't started sanding and finishing yet. So, lesson learned just in time.
Thanks Claude. I'm working on its twin now. I think the next little project we'll go with pine for a change...
Great looking shelves! Like the cool design and the look of oak. It fits well on that wall. Nothing beats custom made. Great job!

I saw the video Kreg put out for this new jig and had high hopes for it.
I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.
First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
