Garage Storage Cabinet #1

I built a garage storage cabinet which is open on both sides and it is on wheels. There is a divider in the middle for the upper shelves and the lower shelves are just one big shelf which you can get to from both sides. I am very proud of myself as I had no help. It was a pretty big project but I love the result! Now I can put my tools in one place and can find them easily.

Hi Wolfgang,

Thanks for taking a look at my cabinet.  I'm glad that I could help you out.  I'm really enjoying my cabinets and I can see where everything is.  I am looking forward to seeing pictures of what you came up with.  Thanks for the nice comment on my cabinets!  Have fun with the build! :)

Lorrie,  Great looking cabinet and thanks for the dimensions.  The plans you mention can be found on www.plansnow.com for about $8.  I just priced the material for the plans and I agree that they are a bit expensive and I am glad that I found your post with your dimensions as I think it is more functional than the 34" wide x 24" deep x 77 1/4" high.  I also have some height issues to consider.  I am not sure what I am going to build yet, but when I do, I will post some pictures.  Nice job on your cabinet!

Thank You SO MUCH Jay!  Coming from you, that is quite a compliment!  I just knew that I wanted to build these cabinets (they are so cool and different) and I had to come up with a different way to build them.  I had never built anything like this before and I impressed myself that I actually did it!  It gave me confidence that I can build other projects.  Thanks so much for the high praise!

Lorrie, For a beginning woodworker I think these cabinets all turned out to be fantastic.  Well planned and well built. What is impressive is the fact that usually a beginning woodworker will not alter a plan and try to stick to the plans due to being uncertain as to how the altering would fit the outcome of the project.  In this case it did not stop you from changing and making them fit your need.  This shows that you are willing to except a challenge and push your skill level.  The end results turned out some very nice storage cabinets that I would be proud to have in my own shop.  Excellent example of talent and skill.  Thank you for sharing your project

Hi Jim.  The overall dimensions for the cabinet are 44"w x 31.5"d x 84"h.  I cut the side pieces 30 x 79.5.  The wheels on the bottom added 3.75".  I used 4" wheels and I inset them on the bottom.  Basically, I wanted to make sure the cabinet would fit under my garage door rails.  I left myself an inch or so for any errors in measurements and for the slope of the garage floor.  I was trying to cover my bases and not have any problems after I built it.  I have a slab foundation and I wanted to put it up next to the wall.  I also took into consideration the concrete foundation which was about 3 inches wide.  That is why I inset the wheels.  For the top shelves I made one side 15.5" wide and the other side 13.75" wide.  I used 3/4 plywood for the center divider, sides, and some of the lower shelves.  I was using scrap wood my dad had given me for part of the project.  I know I made it harder on myself having to fit pieces together to get the desired measurements in some cases, but I did save a little money in doing so.

Thanks for your interest in the cabinet.  I know that I really enjoyed building it and it was definitely a learning experience for me.  I am a beginner woodworker and had to put a lot of thought into this project to fit my needs.  I originally saw the plans for "garage Organizers" in "Workbench" Magazine issue August 2004.  I made my cabinets larger and changed some of the material used as it was too expensive for me to build per the plans. You can view my pictures I took as I was building the cabinet.  I used 2x3's for the framing and it is sturdy.  Maybe you can go online and find the original plans.  Good Luck to you and again, thanks for your interest.  Have a great day!
