Bread Box and Paper Towel Holder

We recently acquired a large breed puppy. She is ten months old and we are training her but as dogs do...she will "EAT" anything she can get to. And training her not to pull things that are in her reach on the counters is one of those things that is taking more than a simple effort to achieve. So we went to the local stores and tried to find a bread box. We were very surprised and the low quality and high prices of the ones available "over-the-counter". Cheaply made, over-priced and probably wasn't going to keep this Golden-Doodle from eating our loaves of bread in seconds.

So I decided to make one and started searching for plans for a bread box that would suit our needs. I found plans but they were either 1. Required more tools than I have. 2. Were just a little too simple and plain.

I decided to just wing it and come with my own plan and in the end came up with this one and added the paper towel holder to save counter space. This one is a bit large I guess compared to what I've seen but since the wife eats one kind of bread I like a different one I also decided to make it large enough to hold two loaves at once (I could have made it so it would hold three by adding a small half shelf but I decided that was too much).

My wife said she had never had a bread box before so I was very happy to present her with this one this past weekend.

I used my Kreg jig for all my joinery and even learned a few things in the process. I feel that I could have probably made it a bit more decorative by adding some inlays or something of that nature (and I may add that later) but just knowing that I can always take it apart because I used the Kreg joinery that didn't need any glue makes it all the better! I'm sure this box will be around long after I'm gone unlike that metal and cheap wood stuff we seen in the store that might have lasted a year (assuming Ginger didn't eat her way through it to get to our bread) if we were lucky. I'm kind of proud of this one as I'm very new to wood working and this only being my fourth new project. And the availability of premade plans for a bread box being so scarce made me think more for myself which caused me to learn more than I would have following step by steps.
