The lines you see at the bottom and lid of the box were done by raising my saw blade just slightly above the plane. I'd say no more than about 1/8". I then cut the grooves all the way around by sliding the box and lid across the plane on all four sides. I repeated the steps at different measurements to get the effect you see. I then used jacobean stain (verrry dark) and dipped kite string into the can until the string was soaked. After lifting it out and straightening the line, I basically "flossed" the groove as carefully as possible.

Some stain would soak into the rest of the wood, but once it dried, I took my rotary sander to the sides until I sanded out the stain. That way, when I was done, only the darkened grooves remained. I then stained the rest of the box with Ipswitch Pine colored stain and applied two coats of finish to the entire box. The result is the cool looking lines you see. Not bad for coming up with this idea on the fly!!
