Share 'Automaxx Clamps'

Is there a trick to using these clamps,  I've used them before with mixed results, last night i could not lock both of the automaxx, the long necked and the pocket hole. Does it need lubricant, I'm weary of putting lubricant in them for fear that it would leak on the material.
