Hi Jim, No I have been absent for a while. I have been very busy with projects that I have to get done in order to even start thinking about Christmas projects. Christmas will be on top of us soon and you know how fast days come and go. Right now I am building some crown molding for that cabinet job I did earlier that needed the large crown molding. It ends up being 10 1/2 inches tall and I'm doing custom stacked molding of which I will stack into two major pieces and install it.
As far as the glue up rack it is basically a wood frame of 2x4's with a piece of 3/4" pvc inset into the wood. The pvc keeps the glue from sticking and acts like a large clamp to keep the planks flat. The planks are squeezed with pipe clamps and it will lean up against a wall. I posted this some time ago and I hope the last post I did yesterday will expand out so you can see the whole thing. If not let me know and I will draw up the details again and send them to you. You might see it better if you go to my discussions and look on page 46. I t was posted on March 4 2011 and again at an earlier date of which I replied to a member named Doug. I know I drew up the plans for him in answer to a question he asked. Hope this finds you well and things going good for you.
I love your rocking horse. It looked really cute. You really going to make a little boy very happy on Christmas morning. My Dad used an old plastic button for our sign on our small ranch sign that read,"Rocking Horse Ranch". We named our little homestead that because one year we had little babies from chicks, rabbits, ducklings, to a bull calf. That was a fun year with school and keeping up with all the little ones we cared for at the time. I can't wait until I make something for the kids to enjoy.
That storage bench looks great. I like your design of the storage bench. The three panels in front and the slide hinge on the lid of the seat of the bench are level and look good to the eye. I also like the way the lid is made where the lid is not noticable when the lid is down in the seat position.
Nice looking display cabinet. I like that stain you put on it. Are you going to poly it before delivering to your client? Nice and roomy for displaying anything. You did a great job on it.
Hi Jim, Thank you for your words of encouragement. Yes I am getting better even is it is slow it is something to be thankful for. I still have double vision and the nerve damage from the shingles attack. I have a doctor's appoint with a specialist in May and will know what the outcome is going to be.
I have recently been in the shop building a customer some custom base molding for his house. It does feel good to be able to do something and I do miss the members of the Community. I do read the posts but cut my replies as it is hard to look at a computer screen for a length of time. Sometimes I will reply if it is something that I feel that I can help a member with. As time passes I will start replying more and will soon be pestering everyone with my comments. After all I did promise that in a prior post. There is a lot of good people and talent on this site and if I can help just one in his woodworking experience, then it has been worth all the efforts that I have put into it.
I saw your framed pictures and was impressed with the nice and attractive photos framed with custom frames. You did an out standing job with the frames. I especially liked the one with the inlay and I am glad to see that you are starting inlay work as it is something that will definitely bring some exciting looks to projects. Doing inlay is like all other phases of woodworking it just takes time and mostly the courage to begin doing it. A few learning mistakes and it will all fall into place. Thanks again for your friendship and take care of yourself. Jay
Thank you for the nice pictures of your projects. I did like the inlay of red heart I think its called on the candle box. I went up online and looked at Rockler's catalog on their box of hardwoods such as curly maple, purpleheart, oak, south american hardwoods too. I can't wait until I get my electric put in sometime this summer.
Jim, sorry you were not able to find our Facebook link in the Helpful Links section. We are cleaning up the site to make room for new features. You can click-through to our Facebook page via the SOCIAL button on the blue navigation bar. You can also click on the grey Facebook icon on the top right-hand side of the main page, where it says Connect with Kreg! Or, you can follow this direct link: http://Facebook.com/KregJig.
Hi Jim. I did find a local ma and pa woodworking shop that was able to order them for me at a reasonable price. Project turned out very nice; grandson loves his double bench sandbox....
Thanks again for your suggestion. A new section has been added at the top right of the community main page with the Customer Service phone number and a link to the Customer Service contact form on our website.
Hi James. Sorry I missed this message. We don't control what photos end up in the "projects." Those are uploaded by users as either a photo or a project, and the project includes the photos they add.
Hi James, the "Popular Projects" feed at the right side is generated automatically by the Community site based on what people are looking at. The more times something gets viewed in a short time frame, the higher it goes in the rankings. Neither of these have a large number of views, but have been viewed multiple times in the last couple of days, so that moved them up in the rankings.
We've contacted the one member to ask if he intended that to be his profile and to show him how to do that. The other about knots was apparently intriguing enough to make people look, so that moved it to #20.
This list is always changing as people look at new images. Plus, we can change this feed to show other things besides photos, such as popular discussions, etc. Regardless of what we tell the feed to show, though, the site automatically ranks them based on what people are viewing.
Thanks James for the Welcome Mat.
Ya I thought about putting them on the outside but I'm just using cheap pine boards & staining them Walnut. I was afraid with Staining it the plugs wouldn't match & they'd stick out like my sore thumb! Lol! Is there not a way to put them on the inside & get good strength? I tried different depths & thickness settings but couldn't get it right! Any other suggestions?
Thanks, James, I love checking this site out. Still getting up the courage to delve seriously into building a shed, if I ever finish my living room shelves. joyce
OH, the router is a porter cable. It came with 2 tops (got it without a box, so no instruction manual) and have been trying to figure out how everything works for a bit now.

a few ideas:
a. laminate 3 layers of 3/16 birch plywood, waterproof it with epoxy, then glue the metal to the lvl. the 4 layers altogether will be the exact height of the existing mitered frame. maybe use construction adhesive to hold the metal in place, caulk with exterior silicone around the metal edge.
b. use my router to plane the existing pressure treated plywood 1/32 less than the height of the existing frame. drop the metal on the plywood and glue down
c. buy another piece of birch plywood exactly 5/8" thick. add the metal sheet on top to match the exact width of the existing frame.
d. take the whole dang thing apart and burn it all. the cedar makes a cool popping sound in the firepit :/
Thank you for informing us on the issues you are having with video views. We filed a report with Ning Support this morning and here's what they had to say: "Thanks for getting in touch with our team! We’ve already filed a report related to this issue with our engineering team. I’ve gone ahead and added your network and your ticket number to the report. We will follow up with you in this ticket once the issue has been resolved by our engineers."
We'll be in touch with updates. Hopefully they can get this issue resolved soon.
Thanks James and Welcome Home! I checked out the shorter driver on Amazon but unfortunately (or fortunately) I ended up with an additional 3 items. :-) I'll need a new shop just to hold my Kreg stuff.
Do you have the model number or exact name of the mini cordless driver? So far everthing I've made around the house now is made out of old wood I've found around. Haven't driven since '88, Neurologist said it would be dangerous for all concerned, so getting wood is a oooh there is a piece of wood someone is throwing out. ;-)
Thanks for the tips. I'm blown away at the slide show going on above me, you are too cool.
Thanks James, The one I liked was the SNAP ON but seemed a bit for a guy who is looking for scrap wood. :-) Sooooo I popped over to Amazon and grabbed a genesis for $29, I'll save up for the Snap On one. :-)
Oh yes, I have a Ryobi 4 volt but it can't get a hole screw in with out me turning it manually to get it all the way in. 7.2 volt genesis sounded like it might do it. Thanks for showing me around. I painting my first project today, and it doesn't look too bad.
One of the toys I bought today was the Kreg Rip-Cut. I checked out the videos on you tube and they all looked like they were sawing flat on a table, are they sacrificing a table? Is there a good page that tells me how to properly use a rip cut, what to lay it on...
Man I know this sounds like a pre-beginner question but if there is a perfect way to use a circular saw? I've kinda been busy with keeping myself alive if you know what I mean. :-)
I have another nightmare. Building and second shelf, same as before only bigger. The Kreg Screw chart and the youtube videos say if you are using 3/4" plywood set the Jig at 3/4" and the drill bit at 3/4" and use a 1 1/4 Kreg Screw. I did and it didn't even get enough bit on the wood to hold it upright. What am I doing wrong?
I finally pulled out the Kreg 1 1/4" screws and without the jig, using the Kreg Drill Bit guesstimated a quart inch more and it is standing on it's own. I must be reading and viewing everything wrong but what am I doing wrong.
Hi William, the problem may be with the settings on your jig or drill bit. Setting the jig to 3/4" means aligning the Drill Guide Block with the 3/4" mark, if you are using the Kreg Jig K3, K4, or K5 model. Also, you need to align the STEP of the drill bit to the 3/4" mark, not the tip of the bit. Here are a couple of images from the manual that may help.
If you are using the Kreg Jig R3, make sure you have the Sliders aligned with the 3/4" mark and, once again, the STEP of the drill bit (not the tip) aligned with the 3/4" mark in the case. Her eare images:
If you continue to experience problems, you can contact our Customer Service Department. They'll be glad to help you.
I can't wait to try it from the STEP and not the TIP. :-) I just watched the videos again and yep got to the step, not the tip. Now if I can just find some more wood on my walk to wally world tomorrow.
Thank you for the comment and compliment. I think I have figured it out, there is a know it all in the "community" that really doesn't.
