Who makes it, and where can you get one?

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and new to woodworking.  My dad left me his table saw and drill press, both 1950s vintage, but they work.  I decided that I would like to set up a workshop and get creative.  After talking to the folks at my local Woodcraft store, I bought the Kreg Master Pocket Jig System, and a Kreg DVD.

The DVD was "The Pocket Hole Solution To... Router Tables" with John Sillaots.  John recommended buying a table top rather than making one yourself, and I thought that the table top he used for this project looked nice.

My problem is, John never mentioned who makes that top, and after looking at the diagram and cut list, not one mention of the top was there either.  Well, OK, the exploded diagram has it shown in the drawing, labeled as "router table top" - but that's not much help.

I Googled around and was not able to find that top listed or pictured anywhere, never mind where to get one.  Does anyone know (assuming that you have watched the DVD or have seen the photo on the outside of the DVD case) who makes that top, or who sells it?

Well, I don't recall seeing that DVD but since it was produced by Kreg, I would guess it's a Kreg top.

Hi John,

I browsed Kreg's website for their Router Table Top.  What they have is different than the one in the video.  Maybe the one in the video was an older Kreg design, but was discontinued?

Hi Ed - There are a lot of places that are making/selling router table tops. They aren't exactly rocket science to make. A couple of pieces of 3/4" MDF covered with some HPL (high pressure laminate, formica) with a hole cut into it for the router plate. IMO Woodpecker and INCRA have the best tops but they charge for them.

The reply above got away from me - guess I'm not used to this forum.  After I replied to your first reply, I called Kreg just for the heck of it.  I was told that the top in the video was theirs.  (Or at least was supposed to be theirs.)

But when you compare the picture of the top that was used imaking the table in the video against the Kreg PRS1020 top, they sure look different.  Oh well, I am taking your advice to heart and may build me a top as well.  I'm not in a hurry, the shop is not even "built" yet, and I have loads of other things to get done before then.  You are right, it's not rocket science!

Hi Jens,

No, it has a white (laminate?) surface, and the miter slot is mounted to the very front edge - it is not set-back into the table like way the current Kreg Table Top is made.  The metal slot appears to be a natural silver color like aluminum.

Hopefully this photo from an ad for the DVD comes through OK...  It's really hard to see the miter slot on the front though.

If desired or as needed, an additional metal ''t-track'' or ''miter-slot'' bar can be added to most router table tops, work bench tops, or the like.

The tracks can be purchased separately, and cut to the desired length.

Just ''mill'' a slot, using a router bit, to the applicable dimensional width and depth, and fasten the bar in place, with screws.

A track can be located across the front, front to back, or in both directions, and as needed.

The track-bars are very handy to have on some work surfaces.

Works for me.
