I have tried a couple of these methods but the one i like the best is wood filler although I don't think it looks as nice. I have a real tendency to leve my wood it's natural color so staining to cover it is usually not an option for me. Sure is faster, and easier though!
I too love this site and it's nice to see how many woman are on here.

I use my cable cutter to cut off the end of the plug to match whatever size hole I am working with. It is fast and requires less work. You do not have to worry about cutting off the end of your finger either. After cutting the plug with the cable cutter; I then slightly mash the cut end with pliers to make the plug-end round again. Works great. You can cut about a hundred in less than five minutes.
I have a Dremel multi-max that I use with a flush cut blade. It cuts through the plug in a few seconds, then I sand it flush and fill with wood filler if necessary.

I like to use a dovetail/flush cut saw to cut then close the the surface then sand then the rest of the way. Often just a bit of wood filler of your choice may be needed.

I sand all the plugs before glueing and inserting them thus leaving less sanding afterwards and they insert farther and easier. The key here is lightly sand.

So, Don, you are saying to skip the plugs all together and just fill the holes?
