Kreg Owners' Community

Hello all,

I'm in the process of creating a blog for the wheelchair user workshop mostly the woodshop;I was surprised that when I became wheelchair bound a little over a year ago, that a internet search yielded little for modding your shop to people in a chair.

I had been a able walker till after a car wreck, when I came back after 6 months in the hospital I came home to find all my benches, tool benches(drill press, miter saw, etc)were way to high to use safely. So I decided I needed to lower most benches or rebuilt.

My first project was to lower and rebuild my work bench,so I lowered it to 30" just enough room to slide my chair under and big enough to use as a assembly table.I also need storage and placed a half shelf under that way I could slid under and still ave some storage for things I don't use daily.I also need to put casters on so it could be moved if needed.

Next I had a set wood bedside tables that the GF didn't want in the bedroom so It sat in storage for a couple years.I took one and if I put it on casters the miter saw would be the same height as the workbench;so that's what I did.

Then I saw a project for a bench using KREG pocket holes,I have the Jr. and the K5, A friend asked me If I could make a bench for her so that's what I'm working on.The pocket screws really tighten up the whole thing! Now I wish I had the Kreg Router for Some new Projects I have for Halloween.

Now back to the main reason I started this;any one have a plan for hand tool storage?

Here is what I need In the workshop

1. has to be accessible from a chair so total reach not more 40-45"

2.has to take very little floor space the chair needs a lot of turn room..

I don't have much room on the walls due to shelf and stuff against it.

Hey Daddywoofdog,

While the attachment is not a plan it is an idea for mobile tool storage.  The basic plan looks simple to build, pocket holes could be substituted for the rabbets in the carcass and casters used in lieu of what looks to be lawn mower wheels.  The height could be modified to suit your needs and in place of the drawers peg board could be added to hang tools.

Hope this helps, Don

Great idea for a plan Don.   I am not wheelchair bound but at only 5 ft and a female, I soon realized that most shop material is designed for a taller build.   I too need things to be easily reachable.   One thing I have done is purchased a multi storage that sits on a set of cabinets I built.   Each compartment holds the screws and fasteners I use most often and labeled accordingly.   When I am working a project it is easy to find the screw size needed, carry the compartment over to the workbench and store it back in its spot when done.
